State grass of Texas! Native plant of short-grass prairies. Purplish, oat-like spikelets hang uniformly on one side of 2-3 foot erect stems. Ripe seeds are a bird food source. Attracts birds and butterflies. The 6 inch basal foliage turns shades of purple and red in fall. Flowers June through November. Very drought tolerant. Height 1-3 feet. Sun to Part Shade. Zone 4.
